The ÖTW Atlas
ÖTW Erste Lagen Book and Vineyard Map
The ÖTW Erste Lagen scheme has been in place since 2011. The first ÖTW Erste Lagen book was also published that same year. Since then, it has been reprinted, revised and further developed every year.
The book documents the classified vineyards of the Austrian Traditional Wineries. It shows where they are located, what defines them, and how the ÖTW’s classification system works.
Vineyards, Regions, Classification
The focus is on the individual Erste Lagen vineyards. Each vineyard is described in detail: geology, soil structure, aspect, altitude, grape varieties and the wines produced from them. This highlights just how varied terroir can be within a region, a village and a single vineyard. The vineyard guide goes beyond a mere collection of vineyard descriptions. It introduces all the regions featured. The respective representatives have their say, describing the profile, development and identity of their area. The process leading to classification is also explained in a clear and accessible manner: from the historical foundations and criteria to the multi-year sensory evaluation. Another section is devoted to the vintages of the past twenty years. This classification provides context. It helps to understand current wines within a broader climatic and stylistic framework.

Lagenbuch
“The ÖTW Erste Lagen Book and the ÖTW Vineyard Map provide a structured guide to the classification system of ÖTW. They serve as a reference work, a practical tool and in-depth reading for anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of where these wines come from.”
Redesigned for 2025
The entire work has been comprehensively revised. All content has been updated, and all data checked and supplemented. The graphic layout has also been redesigned. A new feature is detailed map material for each individual vineyard. This shows the plot structure, terrain and spatial context. The ÖTW vineyard map has also been completely redesigned. Due to the expansion to include further regions, most recently the Weinviertel, a new structure was required. The map now gives all regions sufficient space whilst remaining clearly legible in detail. It presents the geographical basis of the classification in a concise form.
Both publications are available to download in full. In the downloads section, you can also download all digital versions of the regional maps and the individual Erste Lagen vineyard maps separately.
Printed copies of the Erste Lagen book are available from the online shop. A vineyard map is included free of charge with every order.
